I was out of high school, long after the album came out. I knew the hits from Yellowbrick Road, but I'd never heard the rest until a buddy of mine put it on and we just listened. Opened with Funeral for a Friend, which I'd never heard (and is now a favorite) but when Candle came on it just blew me away. I'd never thought much about MM until then, but it made me look into her tragic life for myself.
It remained kind of a hidden gem until the 80s when the live album came out and this song got a boost, and suddenly it was everywhere.
Loved this song the first time I ever heard it.

It was fine that Elton and Bernie rewrote the song for Diana, but I will always remember the song for MM. Different generations.
