  1. I had two Bats as a teen ball player a Harmon Killebrew and a Mickey Mantle. I don't remember ever seeing this Home Run Derby show before. Killer was a big boy there, but grew WAY bigger later in his career and had the same sweet swing all the way through. Al Kaline was another great hitter I loved to watch play who had a great swing, too. Thanks for this very entertaining video, Jerry. I DO Love the sound of the crack of those bats! That was a LOT of money for ball players in those days, too!

    1. Mantel lost, but walked away with $6,500. This was before 1960, which was the year the Senators became the Twins. If interested, YouTube has many of the old "Home Run Derby" shows. Mantel against Mays was a good one.

  2. Mickey Mantle was one of my favorite players from that era, as he was for most kids during those days.

The first Major League baseball game I attended as a kid was at Yankee Stadium. The visiting team was the Los Angeles Angels.

I'll never forget walking up the concourse with my uncle and seeing the majesty of the playing field unfold in front of me. The panoramic view of the emerald green grass of the infield and outfield grass is still etched upon my mind to this day.

I had the privilege of seeing Whitey Ford start against Dean Chance, and "the Mick" hit a towering home run against the visiting pitcher.

Another moment etched upon my mind is the night I heard of his death. I happened to be traveling through his home-state of Oklahoma, and it being late at night decided to stop at a roadside hotel in Joplin, Mo. The disbelief of his death raced through my mind until I fell asleep.
