The Election

Anything can happen in a month, but barring another Trump idiocy, the election is the next big thing on the political schedule.

One more thing on the Kavanaugh confirmation. I watched the Sunday morning news programs today and Republicans (especially McConnell) are stirring up the anger in their party by blaming the Democrats for dastardly behavior against Kavanaugh and continue to call Dr. Ford a liar. Also blaming the Democrats for the circus the conformation turned in to. Of course that's hogwash! Republicans are in majority and it was their rulings and decisions that created the unfair process of the hearing and the joke the hearing became.

According to the talking heads, anger on both sides will motivate voters for the election. That's probably true, and sad. As Democrats move forward anger and revenge should not be their motivation for doing anything, especially if they win majority next month. It's perfectly fine that wrongs are corrected, but that's a part of normal procedures. Democrats need to come up with a platform of action and convince America their platform is what is good for America.

Gerrymandering is nothing new in America. Both sides try to get the electoral edge. Democrats had the gerrymander edge for decades in the 20th century and certainly the Republicans have the gerrymander edge now and in the near future. Not to mention the unconstitutional efforts the Republicans have been pushing about voting. The courts have overturned some of the gerrymandered districts and voting restrictions in individual States, but Republicans still have a huge edge.

Just another example of how our own archaic laws are harming us now. Imagine, allowing the politicians to decide voting districts? Talk about built in corruption. I would agree with those who say the Constitution needs a rewrite, but I certainly would not trust our current group of elected national legislators to  do that rewrite. We are better off working with what have got and have had for centuries.  It's no surprise that a divided populace exposes the weaknesses in our election processes. The Electoral College is only one of those processes along with gerrymandering that needs a rewrite. We could fix the EC with a rather simple amendment to the Constitution, but good luck getting two thirds of the States, the Congress, the president, and then the Supreme Court to all agree on that.

What's needed for the elections next month is an overwhelming turnout out of Democratic voters to not only win majority, but to send a clear message to Trump and the Republicans that the slimy way they run the government is unacceptable. I do not see that kind of huge win for the Democrats possible this election.

But who knows?

Get out and vote Democratic!!
