Sen. Collins has said she will vote for Kavamaugh, which assures Kavanaugh will have enough votes to be approved for the Supreme Court. No matter what the issues in this messy conformation process the Republicans voted as a block to get their man on the Supreme Court. They got their ducks in a row. It's over. The Republicans win.
The Republicans won the he said, she said debate between Dr. Ford and Kavanaugh. In doing so they appear to have won the important issue to the American people about this confirmation.
This sexual abuse issue is a deflection from the question of honesty about Kavanaugh. What about the proven lies under oath Kavanaugh has been guilty of? What about the millions of pages of documents Grassley claimed were off limits for the Committee to consider of Kavanaugh's professional history? This is NOT just a question of whether, or not Kavanaugh sexually molested Dr. Ford, or was an abusive drunk.
Sen. Collins blames whoever leaked Dr. Ford's name is responsible for the mess this conformation process turned in to. That is a moot point considering everything leaks in Washington D. C. and Dr. Ford should have known that if she wrote that letter it would at some point become public. It's my opinion that she did know it would become public, which make that point unimportant. It was going to become public knowledge the day Dr. Ford decided to write and send that letter to an elected official.
So now Dr. Ford will be branded as a liar by the Republican majority of the Senate of the United States. You may disagree with that and claim Kavanaugh serves with a cloud over him forever, but there he sits on the Supreme Court until he dies. Along with Justice Thomas. This imaginary cloud does not exist and his votes will change law for decades, just as Thomas's votes have done for decades.
This puts the vote split on the Supreme Court in Republicans favor. Given the Supreme Court has voted along party lines for decades, it could change the laws and rights Americans have enjoyed for decades.
Sen. Murkowski (a Republican) is a lone vote who could not swallow her parties nominee, but McConnell has his win. She was the only Senator to show courage in the face of the power of her own party, which holds majority.
OH, and Sen. Manchin ( a Democrat) decided to vote for Kavanaugh. A purely political decision to try and save his seat in a Republican district. He turns out to be the biggest chicken shit of all these politically motivated Senators.
This vote has nothing to do with convictions for justice, but pure tribal partisanship.
Another sad day for America.
Heitkamp had the guts to do the right thing, even though her re-election effort is struggling and this may make it harder. Manchin didn't, even though he has a comfortable lead in the polls.
ReplyDeleteThe best we can hope for is that this galvanizes the voters to turn the blue wave into a blue tsunami.
If the Democrats believe they have the evidence, they should move to impeach Kavanaugh. That evidence is probably lies under oath, not proving sexual abuse. Seems a little more digging is all that's needed to get him. Of course Democrats will have to get the majority first.
